Vocabulary

Below are some different ideas when teaching vocabulary.

The Clarifying Routine: Elaborating Vocabulary Instruction

The Frayer model  and templates

Semantic Mapping -
Students use webs and charts to make connections between vocabulary and content.

Categorizing -
Students group words into categories in order to remember words for later use.

In-Depth Analysis -
Students learn highly-used words in an in-depth way. They are asked to use the word on higher levels as they define the word, explain what the word is and what the word is not, provide examples, scale the varying degrees of the word using synonyms, antonyms, visualize, etc.

Word Parts -
Students learn various parts of words in order to unlock meaning from new words the encounter in text

Word Consciousness -
Students are encouraged to point out new vocabulary in their independent reading and use the new vocabulary in everyday situations.
