Spelling

A spelling inventory is beneficial to determine the student's spelling abilities. One that I like to use is in the book Words Their Way. (Additional information about the book is in the references section.) Once the student's spelling stage is identified then the teacher can work with the student to improve that stage and help them move to the next stage.

Word sorts and continuous manipulation of the words with aid the student in having commit to memory. With continual practice the spellings will carry over into their everyday work.

Another way a student can work on remembering spelling of words is through air writing. A student can write their spelling word in the air and say each letter as they write it. Once they finish writing the word the say the word and underline it in the air. (This is taken from Seeing Stars, by Lindamood Bell.)

Please note that a student might be able to read a word but may not be able to spell it.
