Phonics

Phonics is the sound each letter or pairs of letters make.

Use this phonics assessment to see what your student knows.

Sorting by Sounds
Find a story that contains numerous examples of a single phonogram or phonograms with multiple sounds: c /k/, /s/; g /g/, /j/; ch /ch/, /k/, /sh/... etc. Make sound cards that represent the phonogram(s) in the story and then ask students to sort word cards under the correct sound cards. Have students create new word cards so they find new words in print. Instead of teaching many phonics rules, each students to try alternate sounds, starting with the most common sound.

Word Sort by Phonemes and Word Families
Select words that can be sorted by sight or by sound. Ask students to sort the words by how the vowel sounds. Students can also sort the words by similar spelling. You can include some exceptions to the spelling rules, once they learn the common spelling patterns.

Word Study Notebook
The notebook serves as a record, assessment, and resource of the word study activities taught. Students write each learned spelling or sound pattern with examples on each page.

Cloze Procedure, or Guess the Covered Word
During reading, the student predicts the unknown word or part of the word that is deleted or covered with correction tape or sticky notes.
